THE ORGANISERS MAKING A HOME MOVE EASY!

Moving home in the autumn is an exciting time, as you are getting settled into your new property whilst preparing for winter. There is plenty to remember whether you are renting or buying. With unpredictable weather, you need to know that everything is working as it should and the more organised you can be, the easier the transition will be.

The Organisers’ award winning team have compiled a few hints and tips to ensure the process is as smooth as possible.

Security

Whilst there are removal vans outside your house it may suggest that the property is an easy target. Not only is it an invitation if you leave filled vans unmanned on move days, but thieves often target new families in the first month before they have had time to install a Safe for their valuables. Ensure that you know which contractors are expected in the property and why – did the previous owner give someone keys? Check there is an effective security system in place and don’t put yourself in a position where you do this when the horse has already bolted. Change the locks on the front and back doors on day one, install an alarm and make sure that you have good outside lighting.

Food and household supplies

After a relocation, especially if you are redecorating, who wants to think about supermarkets! Make the most of online grocery shopping, it makes life so much easier. Get online and make sure that you have updated your accounts to deliver to your new address – from tea bags to tea services and bulk buys of water, avoid the heavy load and stock your new cupboards without the panic rush to the local shop.

Utilities

Some Estate Agents will assist with the name change of utility provider on your behalf but whoever is going to do it, make sure you read your meters and update all utility companies with the new registration information. This has become much easier and can usually be completed online. Don’t forget your Council Tax and Water in addition to the Gas and Electricity. And the one we would all love to forget – the TV Licence.

Maintenance

If you are in a rental property, ensure you know the process of reporting any issues within the property and what is and isn’t your responsibility. Should your boiler break you will want to know exactly who to call, and quickly.

If you have bought a new house, ask the Estate Agent or ask the neighbours for recommendations to find a trusted Plumber and Electrician. Make sure you take your own references though, and check they have insurance too. It is fine to contact tradesman before you have a problem to build a relationship and establish their prices, as they will be more likely to help you out when needed. They like to know their customers too!

Get to know your area

Whether you have young children and want to find the best playgroup or you need to find a new hairstylist, getting to know a new area can be difficult. There are many ways to find out about your area and to meet new people but it can all seem daunting. Social media is a huge aid now with groups arranging activities and events for likeminded people, and you can meet new people doing the things you love straight away. A good place to start is to invite the neighbours round – you can hit two birds with one stone and ask them about good contractors at the same time!
