PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR WINTER

The nights are drawing in and the temperature is starting to drop already. To help you prepare your home for winter, The Organisers have compiled a list of Must Do’s to keep your house safe and secure.
Heating and Plumbing
- Check your boiler is in full working order. Many people go to turn on their heating to find their boiler is not working or there is a problem with their radiators
- Bleed all radiators to check there are no air locks in the system
- Arrange for your annual service – plumbers become increasingly busy over the winter months therefore the sooner the better
- If you are going away, even if it is just a couple of days, keep your heating on at a low temperature to ensure that your pipes do not freeze. Freezing pipes can cause leaks as the ice expands and cracks the pipes
- Don’t let them freeze in the first place – make sure they are well insulated
Salt and Spade
- When the frost and ice arrive, ensure you have some de-icing salt in the shed to put down to prevent slipping and injuries
- If the snow comes down this winter, make sure you have a metal shovel in the shed. A metal spade is better than plastic as it will not break and will shift the snow a lot easier
Garden
- Put away any garden furniture to prevent it from becoming weathered. Cover it and tie down tightly or put it away in a garden shed or garage
- If there are any dead or loose branches in your garden cut and dispose of them – strong winds love dead branches!
Roof and Guttering
- Check your roof for any loose tiles or slates and fix them to prevent further damage
- Clear your guttering once the leaves start to drop. This will prevent gutters and drainpipes becoming full and a back log of water – water has to go somewhere and if you block the natural exit it will find a route out elsewhere. Perhaps inside.
Power Cut
- Know what to do in a power cut. Know where your fuse box is, have torches, candles and matches ready.
- Know who your local distributor is e.g. Southern Power Network, and how to check if it is a local issue.
Home Watch
- If you are going away, make sure friends or family check your home and make it look lived in
- If you don’t want to burden them, call an organisation like The Organisers who will check it for you – the season of burglary is starting now and do everything you can to avoid being affected
